Theory and Practice
This page will house a portfolio of work and research in Theory and Practice.
It will be updated as I progress through the program.
Subject areas include:
EDTC 808 - Summer Institute in Educational Technology Leadership II: This course is the second five-week intensive summer seminar for Year II doctoral cohort candidates. The course focuses on building the skills, knowledge, understanding and commitment necessary to become effective leaders in a variety of organizational settings.
Project 1: Professional Growth Plan
The PGP is a living document. At the beginning of the doctorate program we created it to reflect our vision of the future. During Summer Institute II, I revisited the PGP again after reviewing it with the program adviser, and I applied some changes to it. Now, as I approach Summer III, I can see
that more changes needed to be applied as my experience grows in the program, my vision for the future changes. I am sure that it won’t be the
last change.
Project 2: Portfolio
The portfolio is the evidence of my progress in the doctorate program. Reflecting on each of these papers gave me the chance to realize how much I have learned personally and professionally.
Project 3: Jobs Project
As I progressed in the program, I was able to see all the possibilities and opportunities that a doctorate degree can offer. The jobs assignment opened up my mind to some of those possibilities. As I researched jobs in higher education, K-12 and corporate, it gave me the information I needed to consider all career options.
EDTC 805, Cross-Discipline Studies in Technology: The focus of this course was exploration and evaluation of advanced and emergent technologies and the means by which educational and training leaders learn about them and sustain them in a learning environment. This course assisted educational and corporate professionals with developing innovative educational and organizational practices across disciplines.
Project 1: Emerging Technology: Tablet Learning
This was one of the assignment I applied to my professional career. The purpose was to study the impact of one of the emerging technology tools on education. I applied the same criteria when my administrators proposed the implementation of Google Apps for Education at the district
Project 2: Create your Own Project White Paper
The term “White Paper” was new to me when I first encountered this assignment but it proved to very useful. It served as a guideline for all of my conference proposals.
Project 3: Theme Park
I enjoyed working on this project and the end result serves until now as a platform for the library orientation that I give every year to the incoming high school freshmen class.
EDTC 807 - Implementation and Evaluation of Curriculum: This course provided candidates with a comprehensive understanding of the landscape of implementation and evaluation of educational technology programs. The philosophies, methods, and processes of curriculum design in educational technology provided the framework for curricular models, resources for decision making, and evaluation methods for educational and corporate settings.
Project 1: Curriculum Philosophy
This project introduced me to various philosophies related to education. I found it to be useful as I started to prepare for my dissertation and consider various theoretical frameworks.
Project 2: Bloom's Taxonomy
The research on Bloom’s taxonomy did not only introduce me to one of the pioneers in the educational research, but also helped me in my career as I was preparing various professional development sessions about assessment, I used the taxonomy to present the concept of higher order
questioning.
Project 3: Technology Use in an Early Childhood Program
In this assignment we explored various technology use in an early childhood program. This project helped me explore educational technology among a population I was not familiar with. It helped me become more effective as a member of the technology committee in the school district where I work.
Project 4: Role of Emotional and Social Intelligence in Education
This assignment gave me the chance to explore topics of interest to me, and served the purpose of exploring dissertation topics.
Project 5: Business Initiatives in Educational Technology
As I explored the corporate world in relation to education, more dissertation topics came to my mind and more career opportunities presented themselves to me.
EDTC 814 - Advanced Effective Models of E-Learning: At an advanced level, this course focuses on concepts and strategies necessary to step into a leadership role in the integration and application of technology and E-learning. Students explore delivering instruction through multimedia and/or multiple modalities with a focus on matching appropriate technologies to learning outcomes. Students will also explore the role of leadership in balancing the priorities of technology integration and curriculum decisions.
Project 1: Simulation Case Study
The Harvard mount Everest simulation was a creative way to instill in us various aspects of team building and leadership. We experienced how group dynamics and group decision making interact.
Project 2: Higher Ed Case Study
This project introduced me to the various steps related to organizational change. I learned how to analyze needs, tasks and target groups and come up with goals and objectives.
Project 3: Leadership Vision & E-Learning Plan
This project was a true experience in instructional design that I applied to my PD sessions at work. I experienced all aspects of instructional design starting with vision all the way to reflection and evaluation.
EDTC 816 - Advanced Methods for Building Online Communities: The course prepares students for roles as online community researchers, designers, managers, and users. It will introduce important concepts, terms, and theories about online communities. Students will gain a better understanding of how social science research can help design interaction spaces that encourage community building.
Project 1: Exploring Online Communities
I never connected online communities with educational technology, but working in this project was an experience of looking deeper into those communities and realizing how much potential they have in the educational technology field
Project 2: Context Analysis
This assignment was a case study of a particular online community. We looked at the community domain and the dynamics of interaction within the community.
Project 3: Community Prototype
With this assignment I learned how to address a need, use the collective learning power of a community and technology to address it. This is one of the projects I applied to my professional career; as a member of my district’s School Improvement Panel (ScIP), I proposed creating an online community for the district’s staff members that would address the instructional needs identified by the yearly evaluations.
EDTC 817 - Developing and Managing Distance Learning Programs: Delivering high-quality distance learning programs requires innovation in program development and delivery. In this course, students will analyze the relevant issues impacting distance education and incorporate an understanding of the historical and current evolution of distance learning into a vision for the future. Students will explore industry best practices in planning, launching, maintaining, and coordinating distance education programs.
It will be updated as I progress through the program.
