EDTC 811, Summer Institute III: This course is the third five-week intensive summer seminar for Year III doctoral cohort candidates. Candidates foster their development as scholars and professionals for service by presenting their original scholarly work to a wider audience and provide a professional portfolio with a growth plan for continued learning and renewal.
EDTC 803, Data Analysis and Report Writing: This course focused on the content and the mechanics of effective data analysis and report writing. Candidates analyzed textual and graphical data from many sources, processed data in ways that readers can understand, and generated comprehensive academic and business reports. Project 1:Constructing Visual Aids This assignment was one of the first I encountered at the beginning of the program that introduced me to the importance of illustrating a report with relevant data. As I progressed in my studies, I realized that to be able to write a dissertation and successfully defending it, data has to be part of it. Project 2:Using Secondary Data: Stock Report Stock Report: Comparing data and coming with a conclusion was the purpose of this assignment. It was based solely on numbers and I learned how to extract information from a dataset. It is a skill that would prove to ver helpful with dissertation writing. Project 3:Using Primary Data
This
assignment was the first practice on collecting data. I learned the aspects of
the process, such as deciding on the type of information needed, identifying
the appropriate sources and methods of data collection and identifying ethical
issues related to collection of data. Project 4:Analyzing Data This assignment was the culmination of the course and it introduced us to the many steps of conducting a research. We were given a scenario of a potential issue to investigate and some related data. We learned to compare data and write a conclusion. We also learned how to make a recommendation related to our findings.
EDTC 806, Research Methods in Educational Technology Leadership: With the program’s emphasis on the scholarship of teaching and innovative learning experiences, this course was an in-depth treatment of the research process and techniques for planning and designing research projects. Emphasis was placed on the appropriate choice of methodologies for a variety of problem situations. Project 1:Group Research Paper for Publication As
a doctorate candidate and eventually a Doctor of Education, I would belong to
the academic community and publishing is an integral part of that community.
This assignment served the purpose of introducing me to the various aspects of
publishing papers. Project 2:Table of Content In this assignment, I learned the requirements and expectations associated with dissertation writing Project 3:Dissertation Introduction: Chapter III This assignment was my first encounter with a dissertation level study requirements. Starting with chapter III, which is the core of any dissertation, prepared me from the start to explore dissertation topics in terms of methodology. EDTC 809, Assessment and Evaluation: This course provides an introduction to systematic inquiry using assessment methods to understand, evaluate, and solve user and organizational needs. Candidates will integrate their knowledge of research methods with real-world challenges of conducting and analyzing research in educational and corporate settings. Project 1:Observational Exercise This
assignment was my first experience at observing a social interaction. It forces
me to look with a researcher’s eye. Despite the fact that the social situation
I observed was a common one, I noticed instances I have never seen before. Project 2:Qualitative Research Project With
this assignment I learned the design and the methodology of a qualitative
study. It was one of experiences I appreciated as I was exploring the various
aspect of my own dissertation. Project 3:Proposal of Field Research Study Writing
a study proposal was the objective of this assignment. I looked at research
questions, methodology and designed a survey. Project 4:Pilot Field Study with IRB This assignment is related to the previous one with the addition of going through the steps of applying for an IRB.
EDTC 810, Statistics for Educational Research: Candidates will develop competence in applying, synthesizing, and evaluating statistics from sources including dissertations, journals, technical reports, and websites. With an emphasis on the scholarship of teaching, candidates will move from basic to context-driven statistics, applying the fundamental concepts and procedures of descriptive and inferential statistics to real-world applications. Project 1:Reading and Writing with Statistics Reading articles with a statistical eye was the purpose of this assignment. I learned to identify statistical terms in mainstream media and analyze their use. Project 2:Group Project Creating our own tutorial website demanded that we examine our learning
and be confident enough to teach others. Project 3:Peer Evaluation This
assignment was a peer-review applied to the sites we created for the previous
project. Project 4:Analysis Paper This assignment was the culmination of the course where we applied our acquired statistical knowledge to a study in the educational field.
EDTC 901, Dissertation I: With the emphasis on educational technology leadership and the scholarship of teaching, in Dissertation I candidates will develop and refine their hypothesis, research contemporary related literature, and explain in detail their research method and procedures, as well as design all necessary research, permission, and data collection instruments.
EDTC 902, Dissertation II: In Dissertation II, candidates will conduct their research, process the data gathered, draw conclusions, and reflect upon their study.
